The Venezuelan ambassador to the Lima Group, Julio Borges, said on Friday that Turkey’s main bank, Ziraat Bank, and Petrochina turned their backs on Nicolás Maduro’s regime, breaking all kinds of relations with the dictator.
“All countries that continue to support the regime must decide whether they put their relations with the rest of the world at risk by sustaining a dictator without a future”, Borges emphasized.
Ziraat Bank, the largest bank in Turkey by assets, has stopped offering services to the Central Bank of Venezuela as a result of the new and more severe US sanctions that increase the risk for companies that do business with Maduro’s regime.
The Central Bank of Venezuela relied on Ziraat to pay contractors, transfer money and import products in Turkish lira.
Futhermore, the diplomat clarified that “the sanctions issued by the US are against those who intend to continue supporting the criminal regime of Nicolás Maduro” and said that these measures “are another step to put pressure to acomplish exit of the tyranny.”
