A spokesman for the United States Department of State assured that the criminal process against Álex Saab is not related to the political negotiations between Maduro’s regime and the Unitary Platform.
“Saab is now facing an extradition process in Cape Verde. Extradition proceedings against Saab will continue, without political influence or other undue influence,” he said.
Given this, the administration of President Joe Biden demanded that Maduro’s dictatorship cease its efforts to sabotage the negotiations taking place in Mexico City.
The U.S. official emphasized that the negotiations between Maduro’s regime and the Unitary Platform “must ultimately aim to restore the democracy that Venezuelans deserve and alleviate their suffering.”
Furthermore, he explained that the negotiations must peacefully restore democracy in the country and end the violation of human rights.
“A solution to the serious humanitarian crisis in Venezuela must be sought, they have been needed for a long time and must remain at the forefront of the negotiation process led by Venezuela,” he concluded.
